 Du Publishes Cybersecurity Textbook

November 14, 2017

This fall, Professor Wenliang (Kevin) Du published a new cybersecurity textbook, “Computer Security: A Hands-on Approach.” The book is written for students, computer scientists, computer engineers, programmers, software developers, network and system administrators, and others who want to learn the principles of computer security and understand how various security attacks and countermeasures work. It uses a series of hands-on activities to help explain cybersecurity principles. Those activities are available online at https://www.handsonsecurity.net.

Du’s book is based on his Security Education (SEED) Labs, which are used by instructors all over the world. The SEED Labs are the result of 15 years of research, development, and testing efforts conducted by Du and his students in a project funded by the National Science Foundation.

Every year, Du hosts training workshops on the Syracuse University campus where educators from other colleges and universities learn to use the labs. The attendees take the knowledge that they gain back to their own institutions where they incorporate the labs into their own teaching. Additional information about future workshops as well the full catalog of lab exercises, is available on the SEED Lab website or by contacting Du at [email protected].
