An Update to our Community from Dean Teresa Abi-Nader Dahlberg

Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff,

This past weekend, the Daily Orange released a new video of the offensive and disturbing behavior at the Syracuse University chapter of Theta Tau. I emphatically denounce the hateful behavior and the language on display in this recording. It is appalling, disgusting, and deeply harmful. I fully concur with Chancellor Syverud’s characterization and condemnation of this video.

On Sunday, Chief Bobby Maldonado released a communication informing the community that 18 individuals have been identified as being in the videos or present at the sponsored event. Provost Michele Wheatly and Dean of Students Rob Hradsky notified the 18 students of their removal from academic participation, effective immediately. This means that these students are not permitted to attend lectures or participate in group work or presentations with the rest of the students in the class to ensure the health and safety of all.

Students, my hope is that this enables you to continue participation in your courses. While this continues to be an incredibly difficult time for many of us, I encourage faculty and staff to be proactive, responsive, and accessible in addressing the academic and personal wellbeing of our students. Students, with that in mind, I encourage you to continue to communicate concerns to me or to faculty and staff members who have earned your trust.

In addition, I continue to seek your concerns, feedback, and suggestions on creating a pathway for moving forward.  My initial steps and immediate steps were outlined in my message to our community on Thursday. Since then, I have heard concerns, feedback, and suggestions through discussions, public forums, and email. I encourage you to continue to do this.  You may email me directly or email a trusted faculty or staff member and ask them to forward your comments to me anonymously.

Furthermore, I will start to hold Dean’s Office hours, and I have invited members of my administrative team to be present with me during these hours as we look to provide additional support. I prefer that you coordinate with Stephanie Vasta to schedule a time slot within the posted times.  I encourage you to come alone or in groups.

The schedule for this week is Monday, April 23, 4:00-6:00 pm; Tuesday, April 24, 12:00-1:00 pm; and Thursday, April 26, 4:00-6:00 pm.  The Dean’s Suite is Link Hall 223.
