Environmental engineering research at Syracuse University includes a broad range of activities in both engineered systems and the natural environment. Active projects incorporate field studies, laboratory investigations and modeling activities. We pursue interdisciplinary research that integrates the biological, chemical, and physical sciences in the service of questions that are relevant to society.

The department has a long history of research that characterizes and quantifies the response of watersheds to air pollution (notably acid deposition and trace metals, including mercury), land disturbance (such as forestry, climate events and urbanization), and climate change. This research incorporates long-term monitoring of ecosystems, process measurements in the field, manipulative experiments, and modeling to address research questions that are relevant to policy makers. New research in green stormwater control technologies builds on this experience in ecological monitoring and experimentation.

Research in groundwater, soil and lake sediment remediation explores innovative strategies to clean-up contaminated soil, sediments and water. Laboratory and field studies are conducted to evaluate the efficacy of bioremediation, enhanced biodegradation, and monitored natural attenuation on contaminant degradation at impacted sites in various settings.

Research in wastewater treatment focuses on developing technologies that recover resources from waste streams. Our work on microbial fuel cell technologies is aimed at energy production from wastewater with simultaneous organics removal. We are exploring the potential of adapting these technologies as decentralized treatment methods in both developed and developing countries. We are also investigating new methods for nutrient removal and recovery from wastewater, with an emphasis on biological phosphate uptake and recovery.
