Design and Optimization

The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering is actively involved in research on design and optimization. Research is aimed at developing methods which help engineers to rapidly identify the best compromise during product development, within the constraints of underlying the multidisciplinary sciences and the desired product functionality.

Research on Computer Aided Design (CAD) includes the development of artificial intelligence techniques, combining conventional CAD with engineering knowledge in order to facilitate the rapid development of products.

Multidisciplinary Optimization techniques are applied to the design of energy systems. The method of physical programming is applied in various design processes to facilitate design decision making.

Research in the area of building system design is concerned with the design of building enclosures with reduced energy consumption, improved air quality, optimal human-environment interaction and rational use of building material.

Research associated with the characterization and modeling of the deformation and failure of new structural materials is conducted at both the micro- and macro- scales. Materials considered include those used in typical biomedical, automotive and aerospace applications.
The increased understanding from this research motivates the development of new and better materials, improves decision making about material selection, and provides more accurate and comprehensive analysis methodologies to the practicing engineer, all of which result in better design outcomes.

These design and optimization methods are applied to the design of aircraft structures, building enclosure systems, energy systems, bio mechanical devices, among others.
