Nikhil Bodhankar G’07, an associate principal and senior electrical engineer at SMRT Architects and Engineers, has been named the 2018 Young Engineer of the Year by the National Society of Professional Engineers. The award recognizes a young NSPE member who has made outstanding early-career contributions to the engineering profession and the community.
Bodhankar, who leads the electrical engineering department in SMRT’s New York office, has more than a decade of experience in specialized scientific research and electrical engineering design. He has worked closely with clients including the GE-Global Research Center, where he contributed to the complex areas of safety electrical circuits, explosion-proof environment electrical design and the development of control logic for challenging global research experiments. His clients have included Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, GlobalFoundries, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and the New York State Office of General Services.
Bodhankar is president-elect of the New York State Society of Professional Engineers (NYSSPE), Capital
District Chapter, and served as its director and vice president from 2009 to 2017. He is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE); the Industry Applications Society (IAS); and Sigma XI, The Scientific Research Society.
He currently chairs the NYSSPE Capital District’s Engineering Scholarship Awards and Future Cities Competition committees. In 2012 he provided pro bono electrical assessments and estimates to Schoharie (NY) County residents affected by Hurricane Sandy. His research in developing a theoretical model for the use of smart textiles to protect U.S. military personnel in combat, “Analysis of Heat and Mass Transfer on Porous Medium on Human Skin,” was presented at the Nunan Research Symposium in New York.
Bodhankar earned a master of science in electrical engineering from Syracuse University and a bachelor of science in electronics & telecommunications from Pune University, India.
